The state of Florida is dedicated to protecting patriots and veterans who risk their lives for the safety and freedom of American citizens. Florida laws make our state one of the most military-supporting locales in the nation. This fact is corroborated by the “Florida Veterans Protection Act,” the result of bill SB 924. The new act is designed to penalize any person found guilty of cheating or attempting to cheat an amount of $50,000 or more from a group of 10 or more military personnel.
White Collar Crimes Against Veterans are First Degree Offenses
Florida statute 775.0844, known as the White Collar Crime Victim Protection Act, includes all white-collar criminal activity where two or more acts are committed by offenders working as accomplices with the intention of defrauding veterans. The offenses encompass all methods used to deprive the victims of their finances and other property. The new law, which comes into effect on October 1, 2020, also protects fraud that targets senior citizens. Possible penalties are outlined in statutes 775.082, 775.083, and 775.084. 39.
Florida is Notorious for Fraud and Identity Theft Crimes
Statistics gathered by the Federal Trade Commission in 2018 show that Florida has the highest number of fraud cases in the United States. The state also ranks fourth in the nation for identity theft crimes. Here’s another especially alarming factor: At least one-third of investment fraud victims are veterans.
Considering that veterans comprise less than 10% of the American population, the law could not have been passed at a better time. All members of the armed forces, whether or not on active duty, will be offered protection by way of the “Florida Veterans Protection Act.”
Florida Awards Harsh Penalties to Offenders
Penalties for people found guilty of these crimes may include a jail term. Offenders will also be expected to pay court fees along with restitution to the victims. For instance, a fine of $500,000 or double the value of the profit they made from scamming the veterans, whichever may be higher. The new law also has provisions for protecting senior citizens who are often cheated by con artists of their life savings and other assets.
